๐Ÿง Welcome to Linux & Self-Hosting! Let's Get Started!

Welcome to the Linux & Self-Hosting community!

Whether you're completely new to Linux, running your first home server, experimenting with Docker, or managing multiple VPS and dedicated servers, you've come to the right place.

This section is for anyone interested in learning, experimenting, troubleshooting, and taking more control over their technology.

You don't need to be a Linux expert to participate. In fact, some of the best discussions start with simple questions!

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ What Can We Discuss Here?

Pretty much anything related to Linux, servers, and hosting your own services!

๐Ÿง Linux Operating Systems

  • Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, Rocky Linux, and more.
  • Linux installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Command-line tips, scripts, and automation.
  • Security, updates, and system administration.

๐Ÿ  Home Servers & Self-Hosting

  • Building your first home server.
  • Running your own cloud storage, media servers, or websites.
  • NAS setups, Raspberry Pi projects, and mini PCs.
  • Replacing paid cloud services with self-hosted alternatives.

โ˜๏ธ VPS & Dedicated Servers

  • Choosing hosting providers and server specifications.
  • Setting up web servers using Nginx or Apache.
  • Managing databases, domains, DNS, and SSL certificates.
  • Performance optimization, backups, and server security.

๐Ÿณ Docker & Virtualization

  • Docker containers and Docker Compose.
  • Proxmox, virtual machines, and LXC containers.
  • Deploying and managing applications.
  • Container networking, storage, and monitoring.

๐Ÿ” Privacy, Security & Networking

  • VPNs, firewalls, and reverse proxies.
  • SSH hardening and access management.
  • Protecting your data and services.
  • Secure remote access to your home network.

๐Ÿš€ Self-Hosted Applications

  • Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Immich, and Home Assistant.
  • Uptime Kuma, Portainer, and monitoring tools.
  • Git hosting, password managers, and automation platforms.
  • Discovering useful open-source projects.

๐Ÿ’ก Why Self-Host?

For many of us, self-hosting isn't just about saving money.

It's about ownership, privacy, flexibility, and learning how things actually work.

Instead of relying entirely on third-party platforms, you can run services on hardware or servers you control.

Of course, self-hosting comes with responsibilities too. Updates, security, backups, and troubleshooting become your responsibility.

But that's part of the fun, right?

๐Ÿ‘‹ Let's Get to Know Each Other!

To kick things off, I'd love to hear what everyone is working with.

A few questions to get the conversation started:

  1. What Linux distribution are you using? Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, something else, or still deciding?
  2. Are you self-hosting anything right now? Websites, media servers, cloud storage, game servers, or other applications?
  3. What's your setup? A Raspberry Pi, mini PC, old desktop, VPS, dedicated server, or an entire homelab?
  4. What's your biggest challenge? Networking, Docker, Linux commands, security, or figuring out where to start?
  5. What's one self-hosted application you couldn't live without?

๐Ÿค A Community for Beginners and Experienced Users

Everyone starts somewhere.

If you're new, don't be afraid to ask questions. There are no stupid questions here.

If you're experienced, share your knowledge, recommend useful tools, and help others avoid the mistakes you've already made.

Feel free to post tutorials, screenshots of your setups, configuration examples (without exposing passwords or private keys!), useful resources, and interesting projects.

The goal is simple: learn together, help each other, and build some awesome stuff.

I'll kick things off with a question:

If you had a brand-new Linux VPS today, what would be the very first thing you'd install or configure, and why?

Looking forward to seeing everyone's setups and projects!
